Film lifts sustainability barrier

Toray Plastics has launched Torayfan CBS2, a sustainable high-barrier BOPP film designed to protect bakery, snack, and candy products, while also protecting the environment.

The clear film is intended to be used as an inside sealant web for packages holding bakery items, crunchy snacks, cookies, crackers, confectionery, and other items.

Sustainability profile

The material contains no polyvinylidene chloride (PVdC), which reportedly serves to boost the film’s environmental impact.

PVdC is not acceptable to today’s end users, who want a clear barrier film that is environment-friendly​,” Kerri Boyens, product manager for Toray Plastics’ Torayfan division, told FoodProductionDaily. “PVdC-free CBS2 film offers excellent barrier functionality without PVdC’s environmental issues​.”

According to Boyens, the Torayfan CBS2 film offers a highly effective oxygen barrier, good oil resistance, a high degree of stiffness, and better puncture resistance than other products.

Cost considerations

Additionally, Torayfan CBS2 can be used to replace coated OPP and PET films. The manufacturer reports the film is more cost effective than aluminum oxide-coated films; further, the film’s 70- and 80-gauge weight presents a thinner option than OPP materials, the company claims.

In addition to producing films designed to provide reduced environmental impact, Toray Plastics has implemented measures to increase overall operational sustainability. Last year, the company invested $22.7m in a second cogeneration power system at its North Kingstown, Rhode Island facility; the recently installed equipment reportedly will enable the manufacturer to generate all of its own electricity and reduce its carbon emissions by an estimated 12,500 tons each year.
